I always believed, and I dont really know why, that once the white smoke proclaimed you Emperor of the the Catholic Church that was it, you remained Pope until the bitter end. Death was the only thing that could separate you from office and your house ring.
Yet here we are in the midst of a papal resignation from a pope shrouded in more suspect morals and scandal than most others of this last hundred years. To compare him to the Borgia’s would be an overstatement but one has to wonder what it is in his closet that is so bad that he would give up this plum, if outdated, job.
Logic does suggest his actions are a finger in the dyke attempt to thwart a tsunami of accusation and scandal. His private meetings with the Italian president and prime minister are, I would think, unusual? I mean I have never heard of nor have any memory of politicians figuring so much in papal affairs, the Vatican is a sovereign state after all. It is natural, therefore, to suspect the worse.
Maybe the man is a weakling, not fit for the job and should retire? Which in turn must call into question the infallibility of the office. . .perhaps? Either way its a no win situation for the man in the funny hat. Scandal ridden criminal or pathetic weakling that never was fit for the job? It, like all monarchies are an outdated institution and should be eliminated. I doubt that what ever follows will be any better but really, the Vicar of Christ? A Human being so exalted he is a top notch, conduit to a god?
It is time we grasped reality and moved on from such childishness.
