I have been in Canada since 1983 it being much like Ikea. . .I just have not been able to find my way out. I jest I love the bloody annoying country and although I have not met everyone yet I like the people too.
There is a complaint though and I wonder how many of you can take it, should I say it out aloud? Do you want to know; do you want to improve and grow. Well I dont give a shit you are gonna have to hear it and its best coming from someone that loves you; most of the time.
Queen Margaret Thatcher the First of the UK, was a bombastic arrogant witch that did more damage than she did good. Yet no one sings her praises more than Canadians or your equally conservative brethren south of the great divide. North America loves her and the methane that fuel her addled politics.
Because you all have conservative streaks running through your hearts you see anything a Tory does as bordering on sainted. Because you are conservatives you have no trouble telling every Brit you stumble upon how the grocer’s daughter saved the people and the country.
I, via experience, have to tell you and everyone that has argued with me today on the matter that you have absolutely no idea what she was like. Unless you lived there under her reign you could not possibly have a clue. Sitting here in your comfortable armchairs philosophizing on the pros and cons with the bastion of the Atlantic between you and her. . .trust me you were shielded. Even the bloody Queen did not like her yet you preach to me like you know a thing or two.
She was the right person to break the power of the unions no argument there. No one disputes that on the day of her coronation the unions had far too much power they had to be curtailed. I am not so positive she went about their destruction the right way but she was courageous and domineering enough to take the job on.
Other than that nothing and not one of you have been able to point out one other good thing she did. . .because you dont know. She never held the popular vote always being returned to office by the prejudicial first past the post system.
So, I repeat, you cannot know unless you have lived it. All you can do is guess and hypothesize based on your own politics, which is, in this instance, flawed. One can, however, listen to the voice of experience, and in so doing change your views.
I am sad that she died in the way she did; I would not wish that on my worst enemy and she was very close to that exalted tittle.
