You have to laugh; I suppose, because…well it is funny I suppose?
All year long Canadians bleat long and loud about how bad it is here in Canada nobody does it better than anyone that is not Canadian. Hungrily we review the world and think, how wise, how grand, how magnificent and how great everyone else is.
We banish our heroes into oblivion and only reluctantly give praise to those that are so in our face we cannot ignore them. We apologize for our weather like it was our fault and look up to those that have the good sense to have warmer climes.
Then, as if by magic on July the First, the entire country (Quebec notwithstanding) is suddenly full of patriots. Faces painted red and white, beer drinking, speeches, home grown musicians and fanatical fever run high. Then, in true Canadian style the flag waving revelry fizzles with the last firecracker. There is a free bus ride home back to bland Canadian disinterest.
You know it is not so funny after all; it is pathetic and blatantly Canadian.
